The Web Master started life in 1996 as the harness chassis of the Palisades Pack. When founder Patrick Kruse noticed customers detaching the panniers and using the inner frame as a standalone harness, he stripped it back and built it in its own right - focused entirely on comfort, lift, and assist. During early prototyping it was nicknamed the "Houdini" for its secure fit on dogs who easily escape a standard harness. The name didn't stick, but the design did. It's been in continuous use by working dog teams, search and rescue handlers, and everyday walkers ever since.
What makes it different is the three-strap design. A belly strap behind the ribcage, a chest strap in front, and a neck buckle that opens the neck loop completely - no wrestling a reluctant dog into their kit before a walk. Four points of adjustment dial in the fit across a wide range of shapes and sizes, from barrel-chested to lean and long.

Is the Web Master suitable for dogs who need lifting or mobility support?
Yes - and this is one of the things it does better than almost any other harness. The padded handle sits centrally across the back for balanced, even lift - solid enough to help an older dog up a steep riverbank or into the car, without putting pressure on their throat or stomach. If your dog is starting to hesitate at steps, it's worth having the handle before you think you need it.
Do you have to put the Web Master over the dog's head?
Not anymore. The updated design includes a neck buckle that lets you open the neck loop completely and wrap it around the neck like a collar - no over-the-head struggle. If your dog is head-shy, protective of their ears, or has limited front-leg mobility, this makes gearing up genuinely stress-free.
Is the Web Master escape-proof?
No harness is truly escape-proof, but the Web Master is about as close as it gets. The three-strap layout - belly strap behind the ribcage, chest strap, neck buckle - means there's no single point a dog can back out of. Because the chest is wider than the waist, a correctly fitted Web Master can't be reversed out of. For sighthounds, tripawds, determined wrigglers, or nervous rescue dogs, it's usually the first recommendation.
Can the Web Master be used for three-legged (tripawd) dogs?
Yes - and it's one of the best options available. Tripawd dogs often cause standard harnesses to twist and slide because the missing limb removes the anchor point that keeps everything centred. The belly strap on the Web Master sits behind the widest part of the ribcage and holds the whole harness stable regardless. It keeps the fit centred, gives you a reliable handle for assist, and gives them confidence to move.
What's the difference between the Web Master and other Ruffwear harnesses?
Most Ruffwear harnesses use two straps - chest and girth. The Web Master adds a third belly strap, which gives a closer, more secure fit that doesn't shift on technical terrain or under pressure. The neck buckle is unique to the Web Master - no other Ruffwear harness has one. And while the padded handle appears on other models, on the Web Master it's genuinely load-bearing in a way that suits lift and assist.
Which lead attachment point should I use?
The Web Master has three: an aluminium V-ring on the back, a webbing loop also on the back, and a webbing loop on the chest. For everyday walks, the V-ring - solid, rated for load, balanced. The chest loop suits training or dogs who pull, redirecting rather than restricting. If you're using the harness for lift and assist, always clip to the V-ring.
